Application Procedure and Admissions Criteria

Programmes organised by the Graduate School of Social Science (including this programme) are cancelled for summer 2020 in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. If you’re interested in following this programme in the future, please email summer-info-gsss@uva.nl with the programme name in the subject line and we will keep you updated on all developments in the coming months.

Application Procedures

Please have the following supporting documents ready to upload  (in PDF) to the online application form, and select the appropriate programme from the dropdown menu:

  • A scan of your passport
  • A copy of your transcripts - if you cannot submit transcripts because of a mandatory closure of your school or University due to Covid-19, please note that we will accept these documents via email after the deadline. When applying, please upload a document explaining your situation. 
  • An up-to-date copy of your CV/Resume
  • A letter of motivation of approximately 400 – 500 (See prompts below before writing your letter!)
  • Pay the €25 application fee by credit card. 

Admissions prompts: There are three possible admissions prompts. Please read the information below before submitting your application. When submitting your document, please ensure that you mention which admissions prompt you are responding to. 

  1. Entire four-week Advanced Summer Institute:
    1. In a letter of 500 words, please state your commitment to the study of human sexuality, your specific interests within sexuality studies, and how they are related to culture and society broadly. Please describe your relevant academic and professional experience within this field. Further, explain why you wish to participate, what you hope to learn, and what you wish to achieve by participating in this programme. Ensure that your letter of motivation answers all of the above questions, paying specific attention to the topics discussed in each of the blocks.
  2. Only Block 1: Practicing Sexuality Studies in a Changing World
    1. In a letter of 500 words, please state your commitment to the study of human sexuality, your specific interests within sexuality studies, and how they are related to culture and society broadly. Make sure to clearly link your work/academic background to the content of this block, and include your expectations of what you hope to learn by participating in this block.
  3. Only Block 2: Critical Reflections on Advanced Topics in Sexuality Studies
    1. In a letter of 500 words, please state your commitment to the study of human sexuality, your specific interests within sexuality studies, and how they are related to culture and society broadly. Make sure to clearly link your work/academic background to the content of this block, and include your expectations of what you hope to learn by participating in this block.

Who is this programme for?

Students should be in good academic standing to participate in the summer school. Applicants must be Current Master and PhD students, as well as working professionals. Applicants should have considerable experience studying or working in the field of sexuality studies (and can demonstrate this in their supporting documents). All participants must have completed a Bachelors degree (minimum).

Early admission deadline and procedure

  • Deadline: 1 February 2020
  • Early admissions decisions sent to all applicants via email: 21 February 2020
  • Payment deadline (tuition and housing) for participants admitted in this period: 1 March 2020 

Regular admission deadline

  • Deadline: 1 April 2020
  • Regular admissions decisions sent to all applicants via email: 21 April 2020
  • Payment deadline (tuition and housing) for participants admitted in this period: 1 May 2020
