The United Nations International Student Conference of Amsterdam (UNISCA) is a foundation that aims to increase the knowledge and enthusiasm of students for international cooperation in general and the United Nations in particular; we do this by offering an interdisciplinary course, including a week of guest lectures and an MUN, to Dutch and international students in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam. The course starts with a week of interesting guest lectures, and ends with a week of UN simulation.
During the first week of the conference, the participants are prepared for the UN simulation by means of substantive, interactive lectures and skills training. Only students who have completed a position paper and an examination with a passing grade may take part in the simulation. In short, UNISCA is the 'Model United Nations' of Amsterdam with an academic angle and this is what distinguishes us from other UN simulations.
At the start of the second week, students will take on the role of either a delegate, lawyer or journalist. The second week will kick off with the participants giving a concise presentation on the stance of their country, client or newspaper on the topics or cases discussed. This is a vital element, since it allows the participant to communicate their stance on each subject to their peers. The conference will then have officially started. With the presentation participants can contribute to their final course grade, which is based on their involvement in both the lecture week and conference week.
After the nine-to-five pressure of having lectures and engaging in the conference comes to an end, UNISCA offers its participants the chance to get to know each other in a relaxed setting. Although the evening activities are optional, it is highly recommended to join in since they offer the chance for further bonding with the other participants. Furthermore, they provide an excellent yet relaxed setting to expand one's professional network as well as hear about future professional possibilities.
